Environmental Issues

Marine shrimp are farmed in ponds occasionally in tanks. The health and productivity of shrimp are strongly influenced by the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the culture environment. Pond processes are dynamic and continually change with different inputs to the pond. The direction and amplitude of a change will determine if there is a significant or inconsequential impact on shrimp health.

Environmental factors may affect shrimp directly or indirectly via influence on natural productivity. Poor  water quality conditions are presumed to reduced disease resistance and/or increase the abundance of offensive organisms.
A working understanding of the basic functional interactions of environmental parameters in a shrimp pond is important for  solving disease problems. The purpose of this section is to provide an introduction to shrimp pond environmental factors that may influence shrimp health.
