Modern aquaculture practices exposes P. vannamei to severe microbial challenge. Heavy contamination of housing premises by facultative pathogenic microorganisms often result in lower performance and serious diseases affecting mostly in larval and juvenile stages which are known to be most susceptible to infections. Microorganisms attack first and foremost the digestive tract which becomes massively infected by various environmental bacteria during each feeding, water exchange, dissolver oxygen and climate changes.
The most frequently occurring causative agents of low production are pathogenic bacteria, such as Vibrio paraemolyticus, V. alginolyticus and Pseudomonas aureaginosa; viral diseases such as White Spot, Baculovirus penaei, IHHN, Taura syndrome and fungal-protozoan diseases like Fusariosis, Gregarines, Epicommensal fouling or Haplosporidia. Bacteria propagate on the cell surface and produce toxins which induce inflammatory reactions and increased fluid secretion into the intestinal contents. Their action results in clinical manifestations of mild, moderate, or severe infections.
Aquaculture nowadays, which in many aspects disregard physiological requirements are often responsible for functional impairments of protective mechanisms of shrimp P. vannamei. In the past, all efforts were focused to compensate chronic deficiency of protective benefical bacteria and primitive immunity in hemocyte production for disease resistance.
