The current intensive aquaculture practices expose shrimp and fish to severe microbial challenge. Heavy contamination of housing premises by facultatively pathogenic microorganisms often result in lower performance and serious diseases affecting mostly young animals (larval and fingerling stages) which are known to be most susceptible to infections. Microorganisms attack first and foremost the digestive tract which becomes massively infected by various environmental bacteria during each feeding, transportation and temperature changes.
The most frequently occurring causative agents of low production pathogenic bacteria are Vibrio paraemolyticus, V. alginolyticus and Pseudomonas aureaginosa . Bacteria propagate on the cell surface only, form a continuous lining and produce toxins which induce inflammatory reactions and increased fluid secretion into the intestinal contents. Their action results in clinical manifestations of mild, moderate, or severe infections and general disorders.
New aquaculture practices, which in many aspects disregard physiological requirements are often responsible for functional impairments of protective mechanisms of shrimp and fish. Recently, the technology of commercial production of specific lactic acid producing probiotics acting against the most dangerous intestinal pathogenic agents attacking animals has been mastered.
Lacter® probiotic product manufactured by Matura Tech Inc., using specific strain recovery Technology protecting bacteria from high temperature ranges to accurate an efficient pelleting process. The product contains Bacterial Culture, Digestive Enzymes and Yeast live cells from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to colonize G.I. Tract to control pathogenic intestinal microorganisms. This probiotic system accelerates the colonization by symbiotic microorganisms and stabilizes the composition of the intestinal microbial population.
